Minor Injuries Units (MIUs) are for injuries, such as deep cuts, eye injuries, broken bones, severe sprains, minor head injury, minor burns and scalds. Many people go to Accident and Emergency departments when they could be treated just as well and probably quicker at a Minor Injuries Unit.
In Accident and Emergency staff must give priority to serious and life-threatening conditions, so if you go there with a minor injury you may have to wait longer to be seen. It is better to go to a Minor Injuries Unit if there is one locally.
Types of injuries treated can include:
–Bites – human, animal and insect
–Burns and scalds
–Abscesses and wound infections
–Minor head injuries
-Broken noses and nosebleeds
-Foreign bodies in the eyes and nose
-Broken bones, sprains and wounds
-Injuries to upper and lower limbsPharmacy First
The new pharmacy first service enables community pharmacists to complete episodes of care for patients without the need for patients to visit their general practice. This, alongside expansions to the pharmacy blood pressure checking and contraception services, will save up to 10 million general practice appointments a year and help patients access quicker and more convenient care, including the supply of appropriate medicines for minor illness.
They can also offer treatment and prescribe medicine for some conditions without needing to see a GP including:
-Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
-Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
-Infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
-Shingles (18 years and over)
-Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
-Sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
-Urinary tract infections or UTIs (women aged 16 to 64 years)Local MIU
