For over a century, the British Red Cross has helped people maintain their independence by providing a wheelchair loan service. In particular, the hire-a-wheelchair service has been highly valued, providing a limited network of locations across the country where people could go to pick up or return wheelchairs assisted by members of staff or volunteers. Recently they’ve reviewed the service to consider if this is still the best way to run things. As a result, they’re changing the service to a new direct-to-customer home delivery service.
This new service means that many more people across the UK will be able to hire a wheelchair, delivered direct to their door rather than having to come to one of our locations. This is something they believe people increasingly want and need. It’s also a cost-effective way to operate and make their resources go further. Please note that delivery restrictions and/or surcharges may apply in some areas.
They’ll be running the new service from one main distribution hub in Sheffield, working with a courier service for deliveries and collections. The public will still be able to get support from British Red Cross staff and volunteers by telephone and through user guides to help them use the equipment.
Unfortunately, these changes mean that they will stop their wheelchair hire service in Abingdon on 14th June 2024. After this date, customers will need to book a wheelchair via their national phone line or website as outlined below.
